Pieter Jansz. Pourbus (1523 – 1584) was a Flemish Renaissance painter who also demonstrated his talent as a cartographer, engineer and surveyor. A contemporary of the artist Karel van Mander, he was drawn to Bruges at a young age as the city offered him the chance to establish himself as a painter during his lifetime. In 1543, he became a member of the Painters' Guild of Bruges and later joined other municipal associations as a man of honour. Pourbus painted historical religious paintings and portraits.
